Set up MFA with Google Authenticator

Enrol your Lavanda PMS account in multi-factor authentication using the Google Authenticator app, and fix the Page expired error caused by an out-of-sync device clock.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA), also known as two-factor authentication or 2FA, is required for every user who signs in to the Lavanda PMS. This article covers enrolment using the Google Authenticator authenticator app.

Before you begin

  • Install the Google Authenticator app: Google Play or App Store. You need Android 6.0 or later, or iOS 4.0 or later.

  • Sign in to the app with the same email address you use to sign in to Lavanda. Enrolling under a different account, such as a personal Gmail, is the most common cause of failure.

  • Have your phone with you. You are asked for a code every time you sign in.

What you need to know

  1. Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone.

  2. Sign in to the PMS. The enrolment page appears with a QR code:

The Lavanda MFA enrolment page showing the QR code to scan, the Trouble Scanning link, the Enter your one-time code field and the Continue button
  3. In the app, select the + button.

  4. Select Scan QR code and scan the code on the enrolment page.

  5. The app creates an entry called lavanda: your email address and starts generating a 6 digit code that changes every 30 seconds.

  6. Enter that 6 digit code, sometimes called a one-time passcode or OTP, in the Enter your one-time code field and select Continue.

MFA is now active. You are asked for a code from the app each time you sign in.

If scanning does not work, select Trouble Scanning? to use a setup key instead. Enter Lavanda as the account name, enter the key shown on page, then select Add.

Troubleshooting: Page expired error

A Page expired error after entering your code usually means your device clock is out of sync with Google's.

  1. On your phone, go to Settings then General management then Date and Time.

  2. Activate Automatic date and time, then restart the device.

  3. Open Google Authenticator and select the three dots menu.

  4. Select Settings then Time correction for codes.

  5. Select Sync now, then select Okay.

Things to note

  • Codes change every 30 seconds. If a code is about to change, wait for the next one.

  • Remove any older Lavanda entries from the app before enrolling again, to avoid confusion during setup.
